Modern research is increasingly based on software-supported methods, yet their reproducibility and sustainability are often inadequate. To emphasise the importance of high-quality research software, the German Informatics Society (GI) and de-RSE e.V. – Society for Research Software, supported by the Klaus Tschira Foundation, are launching an award across several categories.
The aim is to highlight best practices, raise awareness and provide encouragement for excellent software development in science. In particular, young researchers are to be encouraged to view software competence as a key scientific skill. Accompanying formats such as workshops and events promote exchange and community building between disciplines. The initiative is aimed at research-oriented software developers, universities, research institutions and professional societies.
